Understanding Your Birth Chart:

Horoscopes are divided into Twelve Houses. There are several systems used by astrologers to divide the wheel. Astrographix uses the Placidus method to calculate the Ascendant and uses the Tropical House system to divide the wheel into equal segments.

1st House - How You Appear to Others
The Sign that the Ascendant occupies is your Ascending Sign. It marks the cusp of the First House and indicates your temperament and outward mannerisms. Physical appearance is also governed by the First House. Planets in this House are a powerful influence, particularly the Moon, which amplifies the Signs qualities.

2nd House - Material Foundations of Life
This is the House of wealth and possessions and our attitudes to them. The Sign on the cusp of this House can indicate income potential - thrifty Capricorn, for example. Our feelings are also reflected in the Second House. Many hard-working achievers have one or more planets in this House.

3rd House - Relationships in the Environment
The Third House governs our attitudes to family members and close friends. The way you express yourself at school and in groups can also be seen here. The Moon in the Third House makes us an excellent brother or sister, for example, but also makes us liable to change our mind a lot. Good communicators may have the Sun in this House.

4th House - The Family Home - Heredity of Traits
The Fourth House is also concerned with domestic matters. Your relationship with parents and grandparents, and the beginning and end of life. Life in the family home and your personal status are also reflected in this House. Jupiter is a good planet to have in the Fourth House. Saturn and Mars may cause tension if placed here.

5th House - Intellect and Creativity, Memory, Sexual Desire
The Fifth House governs creativity, your ability to take risks and matters of the heart. Planets that fall in the Fifth House and are ‘stressed’ by other planets in the chart can cause you to be self-indulgent. If you fall in and out of love many times in your life, you may have a strong Mars influence in this House.

6th House - Work, Teamwork and Cooperation, Health
Your attitudes to work and the people there, particularly those who are subordinate to you, are reflected in the Sixth House. Overall health and emotional well-being can also be indicated here. Saturn is very much at home in the Sixth House, making you a hard and diligent worker.

7th House - Personal identity, Relationships, Marriage
Close personal and business relationships and marriage are governed by the Seventh House. It has been seen that the Sign that falls on the cusp of this House is a good indicator of who your most appropriate life-partners are. Venus is a fortunate placement here. Mars or Mercury here tend to make you a lively partner.

8th House - Life-Force Elements, Birth, Sex, Death
The dark side. The Eighth House, as well as governing your deepest and primal emotions is also the House of financial speculation and crime. If you are overly concerned with the after-life and sexual matters, you may find a strong Eighth House in your birth chart. Mars in this House bestows passion and intensity.

9th House - Study of the Profound, Spirituality
This is the House of your conscience and your dreams. It is related to the Third House and reflects your desire for further education and to study subjects in great depth. Many great philosophers and thinkers have a strong Ninth House. Long distance travel is highlighted by the Ninth House. Saturn is at home here.

10th House - Ambitions, Vocation, Old Age, Existence Struggle
The cusp of the Tenth House is called the Midheaven. This has a strong influence on your ego, individuality and outward expression. Your long-term goals are highlighted here. Those who reach the top of their chosen professions may find Mars or Saturn in the Tenth House. Self-discipline is also reflected here.

11th House - Wishes, Intellectual Pleasures, Friendships
This House influences your attitudes to friends and acquaintances. It is the social House. If you find yourself active in clubs and societies, and enjoy debating and being the center of attention, you may find that you have a strong Eleventh House. Jupiter is a fortunate influence in this House.

12th House - Seclusion, Addictions, The End of Life
The Twelfth House governs your inner need for solitude and need for escapism. It is also the House of addictions. Many who tend to be self-sacrificing will find their charts influenced by the Twelfth House. Mars in this House can make you very secretive. If Venus is well-placed, a leaning to mysticism is likely.
